IC solutions for automotive LED ambient light and rear light, parking assistance and grille shutter adjustment

At the CES in Las Vegas (7 to 10 January 2020), Elmos will be presenting high-performance IC solutions for LED ambient lighting and for rear lighting in cars. In addition, Elmos, the world market leader in distance measurement, will show products based on ultrasound. In addition, highly integrated, programmable motor controllers for controlling BLDC, stepper and DC motors will be exhibited. You will find Elmos in The Westgate, Suite 19121.

Ambient Lighting
The Elmos IC E521.36 enables a variable, cost-efficient and very space-saving design of RGB LED modules for the connection to a LIN bus. Possible application is the ambient lighting in the vehicle interior. The device includes a powerful 16-bit microcontroller with 32 kbyte NVM, 128-byte EEPROM and a LIN transceiver that meets the requirements up to LIN 2.2. The integrated microcontroller can be programmed with IAR's widely used software development environment. The addressing in the network takes place with the integrated BSM auto-addressing (bus shunt method). Furthermore, the device has three current sources, each with up to 40mA and three 16-bit PWM generators. The 48MHz PWM clock ensures full 16-bit color resolution at a 732Hz repetition rate, enabling flicker-free applications and meeting all known OEM requirements.

LED Rear Lighting

Elmos is presenting a product family of LED controllers for use in automotive rear lighting. The E522.9x family has an output current of 14mA to 55mA per channel. Up to 165mA/IC is possible in parallel operation. The E522.8x product family has a higher current (48-151mA per channel or 450mA in parallel operation). Both families have a patented power management which ensures a constant lighting intensity of the LEDs even under difficult thermal conditions. A variable proportion of the incurred power loss is shifted to external shunts for this purpose, enabling even and effective heat distribution without hot spots on the PCB. Here the unique dual concept avoids an additional drop via the linear controller stage.

Ultrasonic Parking Assistance (USPA)

With the ICs E524.08 and E524.09 Elmos presents another ultrasonic IC family for the ultrasonic parking assistance systems in the vehicle. Furthermore, these ICs can be used for general distance measurements in industrial applications (industrial robots, silo level detection, etc.). During the development of these ICs special focus was placed on an optimal range detection. Thus, the revised signal path currently allows distance measurements between 10cm to 600cm. With optimized system hardware and good environmental conditions, even longer distances are possible.

Motor Control
With the E523.42, Elmos presents a highly integrated motor controller, enabling its customers to realize a powerful and cost-effective implementation of motor control for 12V automotive applications. The IC combines a 32-bit ARM® Cortex® M0 microcontroller and an analog motor driver in a small QFN5*5 package. The three integrated half bridges allow the direct control of motors with 600mA each (RMS) and in boost mode even with up to 1A phase current. The IC can drive either a three-phase BLDC motor, a three-phase Stepper motor, or up to two conventional DC motors. Possible applications include: actively controlled fans (like grille shutter), water valves or small and medium fans, for example in car seats.
