IC solutions for LED ambient and rear light

Elmos will show high-performance IC solutions for automotive LED ambient and rear light at the electronica India (September 26–28, 2018). The electronica India takes place in BIEC, Bengaluru – you will find the Elmos solutions at the booth of our distributors Swingtel or Millennium.

With the ICs E522.31/32, Elmos introduces a drop-in compatible LED controller family. The ICs are designed for input voltages between 5V and 55V and an output voltage of up to 60V in boost mode, and they can be operated – depending on the type – in single and/or dual LED chain mode. With an ambient temperature range of -40 to +125°C and junction temperature up to 150°C, these Elmos ICs are made especially for use in harsh environments such as automotive conditions or exterior lighting. Other fields of use are interior house lights and TFT backlighting. In addition to high robustness, Elmos offers a broad variety of demonstration circuits with different topologies, such as boost, SEPIC and buck-to-battery. The switching frequency can be freely adjusted to up to 600kHz by means of an external resistor or even be synchronized with other components in master-slave configuration. E522.32 two channel devices can be configured to even operate three light-functions in parallel, e.g. Day-running light, high-beam and low-beam with a single-IC integration.

The Elmos IC E521.36 enables a variable, cost-efficient and very space-saving design of RGB LED modules for the connection to a LIN bus. Possible application is the ambient lighting in the vehicle interior. The device includes a powerful 16-bit microcontroller with 32 kbyte NVM, 128-byte EEPROM and a LIN transceiver that meets the requirements up to LIN 2.2. The integrated microcontroller can be programmed with IAR's widely used software development environment. The addressing in the network takes place with the integrated BSM auto-addressing (bus shunt method). Furthermore, the device has three current sources, each with up to 40mA and three 16-bit PWM generators. The 48MHz PWM clock ensures full 16-bit color resolution at a 732Hz repetition rate, enabling flicker-free applications and meeting all known OEM requirements.

With the E522.90/91/92/93 ICs, Elmos is presenting a product family of LED controllers for use in automotive rear lighting. The E522.9x family has an output current of 14mA to 55mA per channel. Up to 165mA/IC is possible in parallel operation. Patented power management ensures a constant lighting intensity of the LEDs even under difficult thermal conditions. A variable proportion of the incurred power loss is shifted to external shunts for this purpose, enabling even and effective heat distribution without hot spots on the PCB. Here the unique dual concept avoids an additional drop via the linear controller stage. With higher current (48-151mA per channel or 450mA in parallel operation) but otherwise the same unique features, Elmos has been supplying successfully the E522.8x product family for a long time.
