At Sensor+Test 2019, Elmos will present a new flexible built-in demonstrator of touchless gesture recognition. As the world market leader for this automotive application, the demonstrator offers a wide range of possibilities and shows application examples for the next vehicle generations: Radio operation, music selection, volume control, precise picture selection, telephone call answering and other practical applications. For the first time, the demonstrator has integrated an optical touch sensor - this makes "waking up" the control just as intuitive as its operation. The new concept makes it easy to integrate gesture control outside the display, e.g. in the centre console or armrest.
The demonstrator consists of a compact operating unit that contains the complete gesture recognition and the optical touch sensor. A standard screen is used for the display. The control unit and the screen are connected via USB, otherwise they are spatially separated. The intuitive GUI enables even first-time users to interact precisely and easily.

The demonstrator is based on the Elmos HALIOS® ICs E909.21 (controller) and E909.22 (conditioner). They enable optical proximity and gesture recognition in the vehicle. The controller and conditioner are designed for use in larger automotive displays. The combination gives the user a perfectly coordinated solution for precise interaction with the graphic user interface (GUI).
The following actions can be detected: Proximity, Swipe, Air Slider ™, Magnification, and more. The object recognition and motion evaluation act in real time on the basis of a simple infrared technology.
Elmos is a pioneer in gesture recognition in the vehicle and the No. 1 in the world for this application. One reason for this is the best ambient light immunity available on the market and automatic system calibration. In addition, many features have been integrated to simplify system design and sensor design, making the devices a plug-and-play solution tailored to the application. The E909.21 is used by well-known OEMs in various vehicle models in series.
